A pastor and his wife in South Africa face charges after officials uncover over 200 individuals held under dire conditions at a suspected illegal rehabilitation center. The center, operating from a church in Mpumalanga, was raided on Thursday by local authorities.
Among those rescued were a 16-year-old girl and an 11-year-old boy, sharing cramped spaces with adults. The living conditions included some individuals with visible sores, others chained together, and lack of basic amenities like running water.
Officials describe the state of the facility as featuring 'gross inhumane conditions.' They discovered the situation during a planned operation, realizing over three times the stated capacity of residents, including more than 30 women.
Gift Skhosana, a former resident, tells Newzroom Afrika that it was common for patients to endure chaining as punishment or upon arrival. Despite the harsh conditions, Skhosana mentions leaving his addiction behind while there.
The couple, who have not commented publicly, charged a fee of 3,000 rand per resident, reportedly funneling nearly half to the church. Police anticipate more charges could follow their existing kidnapping accusation.
A total of 132 individuals have been reunited with their families, while 14 require hospital treatment. The couple is due to appear in court on Monday as the investigation continues.
