Peshawar school roof collapse: what we can confirm, and what we can't

Al Jazeera is our only source here. It says the roof of a school in Peshawar collapsed and that 34 children died. It also says families want those responsible to answer for what happened.

The text gives no date for the collapse and no name for the school. It contains no official statement and no explanation of the cause. We could not compare the death toll with figures from the authorities, hospitals or other media, so the number rests on a single outlet.

Verdict, claim by claim

Claim 1: a school roof collapsed in Peshawar. Status: Probable. Al Jazeera reports it directly and is an established international broadcaster, but we have not corroborated it independently.

Claim 2: 34 children were killed. Status: Probable. The figure comes from one report and should be treated as provisional until other sources or official counts confirm it.

Claim 3: parents are demanding accountability. Status: Probable. This is a stated position of the families, as relayed by Al Jazeera. We do not know whom they are addressing or what specific measures they are asking for.

What is still unknown

We do not know why the roof gave way. We do not know whether the building had been inspected, who owned or ran the school, or whether an investigation has been opened. The text also does not say how many children were injured or how the authorities have responded.

A demand for accountability is not a finding of fault. Nothing in the report establishes who, if anyone, is responsible, and no person or institution should be presumed guilty at this stage. We will update this check when verifiable details emerge.
